Artist Flame 2 Portrait of Max Ernst at Peggy Guggenheim, photograph by Hermann Landshoff, 1940 This very rare portrait of Max Ernst in the apartment of Peggy Guggenheim was taken around 1940. They met in 1938 when she began acquiring his works and she later helped him escape from Europe to settle in New York. The two had a love affair and were eventually married 1942 to 1946. Max Ernst seems here to be very much at home, surrounded by masterpieces from Peggy Guggenheims collection. He is leaning against a Gwasila, Kwakiutl house pole, which is now in the collection of the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris. Behind the artist we also guess the silhouette of the superb Alberto Giacometti sculpture Woman Walking - which now belongs to the Peggy Guggenheim museum in Venice. Sotheby's, Paris |
