SAN JUAN – Le Dîner en Blanc, the world’s “most famous picnic,” which has grouped hundreds of thousands of people with the purpose of having a good time outdoors, will be carried out in a yet to be disclosed public space in San Juan on Saturday night.

About 100,000 people around the world have participated in one of its iterations. François Pasquier and his group of friends began the gatherings in France more than 25 years ago. Le Dîner en Blanc Paris now attracts more than 10,000 people yearly and the epicurean event has been hosted in more than 60 cities in over 25 countries.

While the technology behind the event may have changed over the years, the principles behind the event haven’t. Guests meet in a location, usually one of the most iconic sites in the particular city, that is kept secret until the last minute.

Le Dîner en Blanc – Paris attracts more than 10,000 people yearly.

Le Dîner en Blanc promotes “friendship, elegance and gallantry.” To safeguard its uniqueness and stay true to tradition, guests must comply with certain requirements and follow some basic rules. To participate in this first edition, guests must be invited by participating hosts or have joined a waiting list before April 8.

Once guests have been confirmed, attendance is mandatory, regardless of the weather. The event is held come rain or shine.

The dress code is elegant and white only. Table decoration is also white. Originality and creativity are encouraged. Guests must bring a table, a white tablecloth and two white chairs. Also, a picnic basket with food, glasses and white tableware.

To ensure the location is kept secret until the last minute, guests will meet at a departure place and are accompanied by Dîner en Blanc volunteers.

Guests may not bring alcohol. Only champagne or wine, which can be bought through the event’s online store, may be consumed, because “strong” spirits are prohibited, as is beer.

The option to order food in advance for those who do not want to prepare their own picnic baskets is available and is collected at the location. Guests who prefer this must have done so during the initial registration.
