Peripheral vision: rethinking design in the context of globalization. Unprecedented change is taking place on a global scale as both space and time are compressed, yet we are slow to recognize the impact of these changes. Design is increasingly engaged not only in local, regional or national levels of engagement and problem-solving, but global as well. The strong connection between globalization and design is twofold: economic and cultural. Four snapshots are presented to explore the need for a recontextualized design process. Snapshot 1 explores economics and money; snapshot 2 explores theories of globalization and their cultural considerations; snapshot 3 looks at changing models of communication; snapshot 4 considers the earlier snapshots in terms of space-time compression. The conclusion interprets what these changes mean to design, underscoring the need for a user-centered process and identifying the challenges to design as a cultural mediator in a global context. 2. human-centered design presentation. What designers can learn from user interaction with prototypes Following a description of human-centered design, four types of prototype are identified with their contribution to design process. A specific project, "Book Soup," is examined with regard to a human-centered design process, the development of prototypes, user interaction with prototypes, concluding with the current state of the project. "Book Soup" is an internet based digital database for middle school children's reading material. It encompasses a website for reading selection and downloadable data and reader preferences for either a customized physical or hand-held electronic book. Brief biography of Prof. Sharon Helmer Poggenpohl Sharon Helmer Poggenpohl is an associate professor of design at the Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, where she is the co-coordinator of their doctoral program and teaches in the area of human-centered communication design. She is editor and publisher of the scholarly journal Visible Language, and has written articles and made presentations on the topics of design research, globalization, user-centeredness, and design education. For the past five years she has taught the "Future of Learning" Workshop at the Institute of Design.
