At my university in the US, art and design students were not thought of having the same intellectual caliber in comparison to engineering or business majors. Also in the job market artists and designers make considerably lower salaries compared to nurses or teachers. During the Renaissance architects, goldsmiths, carpenters, painter’s etcetera were commissioned by wealthy families to paint or build relics. And some families even sent their children to guilds in hopes their son would become an apprentice of a skillful master. Of course as time passes so do the people, but within modern times why do you think we as a society of the first world put such less emphasis and pride within art, craft, and design? 미국에서 다녔던 대학교에서는 예술 디자인학과 학생들이 공학이나 경영학과 학생들과는 다른 지적 능력을 가지고 있다고 여겼습니다. 그리고 구직 시장에서도 작가와 디자이너들은 간호사나 선생님들보다 월급을 상당히 낮게 받습니다. 르네상스 시대에는 건축, 금세공인, 목공, 화가 등의 사람들은 부유한 사람들에게 그림을 그려주거나 유품을 만들어 주며 급여를 받았습니다. 게다가 어떤 가족들은 자신의 아들을 길드에 보내 기술이 좋은 스승의 제자가 되길 바라기도 했습니다. 시간이 지나면 사람들도 변하기 마련인데, 왜 현대 사회에 들어선 지금도 예술, 공예, 그리고 디자인은 평가가 절하되고 있는 걸까요? 여기에 대해 교수님은 어떻게 생각하시는지요? |
