In 1911, sick and convinced he was dying, Gaudí retreated to the Pyrenees to recover. During that difficult time he drew the first plans for the Passion Facade of the Sagrada Família, a series of scenes telling the story of Jesus's final days.
One of those scenes shows Roman soldiers gambling for Jesus's robe. It comes straight from the Gospel of John. Instead of tearing his seamless tunic into pieces, the soldiers guarding the crucifixion threw dice for it instead.
Gaudí died in 1926 without ever seeing this facade built. It took until 1987, more than 60 years later, for sculptor Josep Maria Subirachs to start carving the scenes based on Gaudí's original sketches. Before touching a single stone, Subirachs spent an entire year studying those drawings so his work would stay true to Gaudí's vision, even though his own style was completely different: sharp, angular, almost brutal, a deliberate contrast to the soft curves Gaudí is famous for.
You can still see this scene today, high on the upper level of the Passion Facade, part of the path that leads visitors through the last days of Jesus's life.
